Wine Cap (Stropharia rugoso-annulata) is one of the easiest mushrooms to grow outdoors. Wine Cap produces clusters of classic ‘cap and stem’ mushrooms with wine coloured caps that fade to tan as they mature. Wine Caps are also commonly referred to as ‘king stropharia’ or ‘garden giant’ as the can grow to be 15cm in diameter!
This species grows best in partial-shade (4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight a day).
Perfect for gardens or permaculture projects, Wine Cap spawn can be used to inoculate hardwood chip pathways or perennial beds with straw and/or hardwood chips.
Use 12 dowels to inoculate ~1m square.
Dowels are 4" x 1/2" (~10cm x ~1.3cm) each.
Caution: Before you eat your harvested mushrooms, be sure to positively identify them as Wine Caps.

All our spawn is handmade in our lab using our own grain spawn and a hardwood dowels.
We make outdoor spawn to order on a seasonal basis to align with the Canadian outdoor growing season. You can pre-order your spawn by selecting which month (March, April, May, June) you would like it shipped via Canada Post or ready for pickup at the farm.

We recommend using peg spawn to inoculate:
Mushroom Beds using straw and/or hardwood chips as substrate. Twelve pegs will inoculate an approximately one meter square bed. Simply push the pegs into the bed. Click here to learn how to make a mushroom bed.

If you do not plan to use your spawn immediately, store it in a clean, undisturbed corner of your fridge for up to 8 weeks.
